He is shy. Unassuming. Inexperienced.

She is Subway Girl. Cool. Unattainable.

From the moment he sees her on a Hong Kong subway, Simon is intrigued by Amy, but he doesn't have the nerve to talk to her. When he finally works up the courage, he realizes he can't. Because Amy doesn't speak Chinese, and Simon is failing English.

But somehow, Amy and Simon connect, and they find that they understand each other. Enough for Simon to admit that he is dropping out of school. Enough for Amy to confess that she is pregnant with her ex-boyfriend's baby. Amy and Simon feel lost in a world so much bigger than they are, and yet they still have each other.

P.J. Converse taught English in Hong Kong for two years, which was the inspiration for Subway Girl, his first YA novel. Read the first three chapters here.

And her grandmother died because . . . well, older people do that. But now, Kylie's acquired a stalker and she hasn't a clue what he wants or how to get rid of him . . . and she really wants to get rid of him because apparently she's the only one who sees him. The Gathering by Kelley Armstrong
Release Date: April 12, 2011
Publisher: HarperCollins
Series: Darkness Rising
Goodreads | Amazon | The Book Depository

Strange things are happening in Maya's tiny Vancouver Island town. First, her friend Serena, the captain of the swim team, drowns mysteriously in the middle of a calm lake. Then, one year later, mountain lions are spotted rather frequently around Maya's home—and her reactions to them are somewhat . . . unexpected. Her best friend, Daniel, has also been experiencing unexplainable premonitions about certain people and situations.

It doesn't help that the new bad boy in town, Rafe, has a dangerous secret, and he's interested in one special part of Maya's anatomy—her paw-print birthmark.

I haven't read any books from Kelley Armstrong, but only hear good things about them. This is the first book in the Darkness Rising series, but is also the fourth book in the Darkest Powers series. Can anyone tell me if I read this first could it ruin the Darkest Powers series for me?

Read the first nine chapters here.

  5. I've been wanting to start the new Kelley Armstrong series too, just so I can actually get in on one from the start. If it's like some of the other off-shoot series' that I have read - I haven't read the Darkest Powers series - then usually the characters and things don't carry over, but the mythology might.

You won't get spoiled as far as plot/characters go, I'm guessing - usually those don't get moved or mentioned in the side series'.
