Deep in the heartland of the United Sentry States are the burning ruins of the Black City, a melting pot simmering with hostility as humans and Darklings struggle to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of a brutal and bloody war. A wall now divides the city separating the two races. Trapped on the wrong side of the wall is sixteen-year-old hustler Ash Fisher, a half-blood Darkling who’ll do whatever it takes to survive, including selling his addictive venom 'Haze' to help support his dying mother.
Then there's Natalie Buchanan, the daughter of the Sentry Emissary, who feels imprisoned by her life of privilege and fame. When their paths cross, they instantly detest each other but Ash is shocked when his once still heart starts to beat. Bonded by a mysterious connection, Ash and Natalie first deny and then struggle to fight their forbidden feelings for each other, knowing if they’re caught, they'll be executed. Then Haze users start dying all over the city and Ash discovers the terrible truth behind his and Natalie’s mystical connection. Suddenly, city walls and the threat of execution become the least of their problems.
The cover hasn't been revealed yet, so I used Ash and Natalie's tattoo logo as its replacement. The two hearts represent their dual heart, which are being strangled by rose thorns, representing Purian Rose – the man determined to keep them apart. It was made by Amy from Goths and Goggles.
I love the line about Ash's once still heart starting to beat. It always conjures this image in my mind where everything is dark and silent until I hear the sound of beating that gets louder and louder, realizing later that it's a heartbeat. Like the teaser trailer for the original The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo here, if you replaced the tattoo needle with a heartbeat. From the sound of the series and the synopsis for Black City, I already have an epic theme song in mind, Two Steps from Hell's Moving Mountains.
Ominous, but with hope and a fighting spirit (the trumpets) that whatever they have to overcome can be defeated.
One of the inspirations for Black City (read the interview here) was a film where a teenager begins to dispense therapeutic advice and prescription drugs to the student body at his new high school in order to become popular called Charlie Barlett starring Anton Yelchin, Robert Downey Jr. and Kat Dennings.
And the image below was an inspiration for the world the story is set in.
Elizabeth Richards used to review videogames, which sounds like such a cool job and like me has a fascination with volcanoes. She's seen Stromboli, Mt. Etna and Vesuvius – which is the one that started my fascination with them.
