There is need. And then there is Fate...
Being destined to become some kind of supernatural electrical outlet isn't exactly awesome—especially when Alexandria's "other half" is everywhere she goes. Seth's in her training room, outside her classes, and keeps showing up in her bedroom—so not cool. Their connection does have some benefits, like staving off her nightmares of the tragic showdown with her mother, but it has no effect on what Alex feels for the forbidden, pure-blooded Aiden. Or what he will do—and sacrifice—for her.
When daimons infiltrate the Covenants and attack students, the gods send furies—lesser gods determined to eradicate any threat to the Covenants and to the gods, and that includes the Apollyon... and Alex. And if that and hordes of aether-sucking monsters didn't blow bad enough, a mysterious threat seems willing to do anything to neutralize Seth, even if that means forcing Alex into servitude... or killing her.
When the gods are involved, some decisions can never, ever be undone.
Unputdownable! Pure is a book that I've been highly anticipating before I even turned the last page of Half-Blood and is an amazing continuation to the Covenant series. We learn more about the world it's set in and its unfair politics.
Alex is still trying to prove she belongs at the Covenant despite everything that's happened. When she's not in class, she has extra training sessions with Aiden—the Pure and Sentinel she has forbidden feelings for and Seth—the Apollyon and who she's destined to be with once she awakes on her 18th birthday. To Alex's disappointment, there hasn't been a repeat of what happened with Aiden in Half-Blood. He's always so controlled and trying to do the right thing, but my favourite parts are when that control slips. When it does, Alex is always the reason.
Alex is one of my favorite female protagonists with her snarky remarks and inner dialogue. I love her more after every book. There are so many reasons for her to run and fall apart—the death of her mother (twice), those who want to see her enslaved and now another dangerous unknown—but she keeps fighting. I have a lot of respect for her.
In Half-Blood I only saw one side to Seth—the very cocky and powerful Apollyon everyone with the exception of Alex swoons over. Now, I've seen a more caring side to him, but I'm always wondering if he really cares for Alex or is it just this special connection they have because of her future awakening as the next Apollyon. I'm suspicious there is an ulterior motive, but maybe I think that because I'm always comparing Seth to Aiden—night and day with the exception they both want Alex. Only time will tell.
Pure is an exceptional sequel and another amazing novel by Jennifer L. Armentrout that has it all—action, suspense, romance and more life altering events for a strong heroine that has already been through so much. It was extremely engrossing. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough and at the same time wanted to pace myself so the end wouldn't come as fast. I can't wait to find out what happens in the next book—Deity.
